Although both the old and new valves have 24 splines, the newer valve features thinner splines that are not compatible with the old-style handle. If you currently have the old valve, the new version will not fit your existing handle. In this case, you’ll need to order a matching new handle to ensure compatibility You can tell the difference by removing your own Valve and comparing to the picture here. One obvious difference is the Nut – it is ‘stepped’ on the new version. Some very Old Installation guides refer to the Old Valve as 1301R but even later guides specifying 3656R refer to the older Valve as well. Used in San Marco Taps such as Tuscany This is a compression valve i.e twist to turn on / off and the same valve would be used in the hot and cold feed.
